Writers want to gain a following for their books. The first thiing you can do, even if you don't know a lot of people, is to begin writing articles online in a topic that you enjoy.
There are a lot of sites from which to choose so make sure you look around. I chose examiner.com because they had a category opening that made sense for me, mortgages, which fit with my financial and mortgage background. Once I wrote for them for a while, I applied with Yahoo!
Make sure you do not rely on the article writing site to get readership. Post a link (but don't spam) with a catchy title on Twitter, Facebook or IFogo! Each new reader is a potential sale for your books. Plus, you begin to meet new, interesting people.
